It sets the mood. This was my first experience at a deep dream, coming true. This song was on my mind a full year earlier in 2012 when I thought I might get an opportunity to edit an "intro" for the festival, as I had been editing for a couple years and it was the ultimate dream. Growing up the intros were always just, FUN. So FUN. They had $50 student passes for any kid in the school system, as well as for teachers, and we could do as many movies as you could endure. The intro was this great artistic, exciting look at all the films you have in store and available to you at the festival. I had been interning in my second year there and doing a lot of personal work and edits on the side. Reaching the end of my tasks for that year, in helping cut up all the footage into packages for other editors, I did not get an email to be a part of the edit team..... What's weird is how I was pissed about something I didn't ask anyone about, I just thought it would happen. But I was still involved in the festival that inspired everything I care about in my life and career, so no complaints honestly. A year later, as I was ready to graduate highschool, they asked me to go for it. Because it had been a whole year I was self-conscious about that song, thinking "that would be to easy", honestly I knew this song was just amazing and I was thinking "is this a cop-out to do something I KNOW will be awesome? do I need to up the ante?" - i'm all over the place. I showed my sister this other song I was going to use, and she immediately literally said "you're going to do a boring song?" - it was Sigur Ros and big and dramatic, and at the moment I thought that was extremely insensitive to say to someone who didn't know how to be confident in what they do yet - But she didn't really know that and every creator needs to be able to believe in themselves without needing everyone's approval all the time. So I took it on the chin and think about using the original song.....which I just decided to do, it was more fun and when the time came to edit, I understood that song really well. It had perfect rhythms and sections to have a build and then a celebration. It's still my favorite intro song and I just can't find anything else that has the ethos of the festival from lyrics, to musicality, and the dynamic mood changes in the song that provide for such an awesome edit. As well, all the footage we were provided still had the original audio attached so there was so much opportunity to throw things in the edit to keep it alive and fresh. Recently we have not done that the last couple of years and I believe it provides so so much more for the editors to make something that feels like the festival. All in all, I love you Mountainfilm and David Holbrooke for letting me go for it. I met the director of the Crested Butte Film Festival after being a stand-in on a Colorado Tourism Board commercial where he was my dad, and I still call him that, as I am his screen-son, and so proud. Their process is different from Mountainfilm's because frankly Mountainfilm has the ability to provide a 100GB - 2hour HD cut of footage from the films themselves, providing moments actually from the film, requiring quite a bit of man power. Here, we made a cut from the trailers online, so we were compressing and cutting and then exporting and compressing already YouTube compressed data. Almost shamefully though, it works darn well, although limiting the length of clips to really use the footage how you wish.   I really enjoy these intro edits because there;s a solid deadline and it's a constant challenge to, with absolutely no direction, find a song, concieve ofthe edit, look at the footage you have access to, and try and make something that is going to titilate an audience watching it of the films available to them. Six months later they invited us down for a week to see the farm for ourselves, and try to walk away with a film of our experiences as an American liaison for their farm in the future. We went down for a week, as one trip of hopefully at least a few more to the El Quiche region of rural and native Guatemala. The Arenas family are incredibly hospitable and fun people, and my dad was able to geek out with the Lic. Enginero, the farm agriculture engineer, about the growth of their over half-a-dozen farms across the area. They require constant "gardening", up-keep, and transfer to larger plots of land every few months until they turn into trees. They literally ask a qualified student what they're interested in from NASA to Solar Energy, Army drone construction, ecology and or political science, and then contacts the best scientists in the world and asks if they'd like an intern. Pinhead then sends them there on Pinhead's dime for two months in the summer. They asked to make a video with me a few years ago because they just wanted to show "the wonder these kids get access to". Wonder is a feeling and I was able to really latch onto that as we thought about this for the next few months. I really enjoyed it. All summer we gathered footage from many different events. After a couple months my little script came together through sheer pressure of the deadline. I was unsure exactly what to do, but I had to do something, and after months of talking about it, experiencing it, the words very naturally came together. As I think about it now, a few years later, I still love this piece and I wonder what it was that allowed me to feel such magic and follow my instinct. With any story, what's hard to do is find the thing you're going to latch onto, what your ethos will be through the project. Because of that I've spent a lot of time trying to force some emotional feel to products or other organizations...nothing has been as organic as this. What I finally realized after a while was that I just genuinely gave a damn about this organization as i'd grown up seeing what it can do for kids. For a couple of my friends it did literally make their dreams come true through summer internships and so I actually felt like that was their power, that's what they were doing. When you finally get to that point with an understanding of your "product" or story, then I think it can really come together. My final lesson learned from that realization is that you need to know what you want and who you are (in life) and what you are fascinated by. Follow and believe in that fascination, don't force yourself to do "other things", have belief that you care about this thing and other people will care about other things. After that, don't feel self-conscious turning down work you're simply not interested in, because you will be disappointed with what it doesn't become because of how much you're not into it. I did honestly believe that professionals being professionals learnt the craft so well that they can fake it when they're getting paid; that the real skill is making something you don't care about. That might sound neurotic, and maybe it is, because I'm still not sure where I got that impression from. But I then thought I needed to be able to do work that I didn't like to get paid, and move onto the next thing. But there's no next thing if all your time is spent on projects you don't want to do and everything becomes quite daunting. It was so much harder than I thought. This Pinhead project was one of the first things I did with a larger organization, and it came off really well. I hated the projects I was working on afterwards because I was saying yes to everything, and didn't really know how to go about projects in a fast way. When the overlords at the top of highschool's seniority ladder, the "seniors" move house, they leave a senior "pod" including two couches, a desk, and a table, the infamous senior table. Each year some artist in the class paints that table. The kids before us did it in their own strange way, and for months nobody did anything when we were seniors. I always wanted to film it by the time it was ours, I cherished it and thought it was so timeless and cool. It's the tradition! So Keenan Zeller, one of our beloved awesome artists in our grade, finally grabbed a couple bottles of paint and just went to town. It was tough for us all to finish this project we believed in so much, in a time when my life wasn't as stable as I thought it could be. But the memories are there forever of these guys inviting me in, and bringing me along.
